The Palm Grove, declared a World Heritage Site in November 2000 by UNESCO is the largest in Europe, boasting more than 200,000 palm trees.
Within the borough of Elx an area of 5,400,000m2 is occupied by palm plantations the largest of which are located around the built-up area. The rest are scattered around Camp d’Elx, or surrounding countryside. The 2,700,000m2 of urban plantations are distributed thus: 2,000,000m2 are now public property and the remaining 700,000m2 are private.
Elx Town Hall is undertaking an integrated programme to restore the palm grove to its former glory, recovering its traditional structure and other singular elements related to its past agricultural use, such as adobe walls, the irrigation network, traditional houses and even the crops.
Because of the unique typology and location, some of the palm plantations have been restored for the use and enjoyment of the general public as parks and gardens.
